Highlights from Sydney Festival

Sydney Festival has already kistarted with a fantastic performance by Grace Jones (as a headliner for a “family” event, Jones used the word “motherfucker” at least 10 times on stage wearing a g-string and fighting with security) and others on Sydeny Festival First Night Saturday the 10th of January this year. Grace Jones has already been busy playing a few intimate shows at Enmore Theatre, which promised to be quite a treat. Other highlights that I’m particularly looking forward to include a performance by UK based band The Bays, who are doing a live score for German film Run Lola Run tomorrow (Wednesday) and Thursday, the 14th and 15th of January. More info:

NB: Free event.

UK band The Bays make exhilarating live electronic music. Their seamless segues from hip hop and drum ‘n’ bass to ambient grooves and dubby basslines challenge every old-school notion of a live band. A band with no recordings, no rehearsals and no set-list, The Bays live in the moment, giving an unrepeatable, completely improvised performance every single time.
Here, the band takes Tom Twyker’s iconic 1998 film Run Lola Run as inspiration. A punchy play on fate and choices with a three-way plot that careens through cartoon sequences, bank heists and the urban jungle, it is the perfect fit for The Bays’ fast, loud, dazzling music.

iiNET FILMS AFLOAT AT DARLING HARBOUR

Watch cult-classic films on a floating screen in the beautiful surrounds of Darling Harbour, as highly acclaimed musicians from home and abroad play especially composed, dynamic live soundtracks.

A diverse selection of musicians perform sweat-drenched, visceral live scores with both world music and club influences. Encompassing sampling, tribal percussion and orchestral arrangements, and ranging from synchronized movements to graceful, free-form improvisation, their music gives new meaning and life to these well-loved flicks.

So round up your friends, head down to Darling Harbour and enjoy a free evening of live music and film under the stars. Before the feature each night, we’ll be screening the best entries from the iiNet Get Animated competition.

Also of particular interest is All Tomorrow’s Parties (this Saturday and Sunday along with the numerous sideshows for the festival), curated by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and Hyper Dub on the 24th of December (featuring The Bug). Make sure you catch some of these events, as some of them are particulary unique and not to mention extremely promising.
